Marijai Rusteikaitei suteikta:
1992 m. – Žūvančiųjų gelbėjimo kryžius (po mirties).
1996 m. – Pasaulio tautų teisuolės vardas (po mirties).

The origins of the monastery in Panevėžys

The Congregation of the Sisters of Divine Providence is a apostolic monastic community belonging to the Roman Catholic Church. The founder of the Congregation of the Sisters of Divine Providence, Marija Rusteikaitė (1892-1949), came to Panevėžys in 1927 and, seeing the great poverty and misery, experienced in her heart that God was calling her to serve the poor in a special way. Soon after, she began to work in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Later on, the first followers, the future sisters, began to gather and wanted to serve the poor, the sick and the orphans in charitable and educational activities. On 19th November 1930, the Bishop of Panevėžys, Kazimieras Paltarokas, approved the Statute of the Sodality of the Sisters of Divine Providence, which states: “To be a saving and salutary instrument of God’s love is our most ardent desire and the essence of our work” (Statute of the Sodality of the Sisters of Divine Providence I, § 1, 1930). Until her death, Marija Rusteikaitė worked with the outcasts to help them in Panevėžys and Vaiguva by setting up shelters, old people’s homes, craft schools, and by rescuing Jews during the Nazi regime, thus risking her own life (15 Jews were saved).
To Marija Rusteikaitė:
1992 – The Life Saviour Cross (posthumously).
1996 – Righteous Among the Nations (posthumously).
2011 – Named a Servant of God, beatification case opened.

Nuns during the Soviet occupation

The Congregation went underground. The sisters, living a secret monastic life, helped the Church through their services: playing organ and the decoration of the churches, catechesis and the education of young people by leading processions and organising retreats. The sisters also contributed to the printing and distribution of the Chronicle of the Catholic Church in Lithuania and other religious literature.
After the restoration of independence
After the restoration of independence, the sisters had to reorganise themselves into a public monastic way of life. In 1997, a new central congregation house was built in Panevėžys (Apvaizdos takas 6), where the sisters could begin their community life and their first activity as a monastery.

Monastery in Utena

In 1992, nuns from the United States of America came to Utena. Sr.Michele Garas and Sr. Dolorita Butkus. They were actively involved in the social and ecclesial life of the region: they taught religion, prepared children for the sacraments, organized support for needy families, and, most importantly, helped to establish the St. Clare’s Hospice. Their mission in Lithuania has been closed since 2012 and the sisters have returned to the United States.
The first Sisters of Divine Providence arrived in Utena, Vilniaus St. 55, on the 21th May 2012. They opened the convent’s home to the people, inviting them to prayer, communion, scripture study, and educational activities. Gradually, with God’s guidance, they realised that both the people of Utena and the people of other towns needed an open monastery, where everyone would be listened to, welcomed and cared for. The sisters decided to stay in the city, here, among the houses, to create a spiritual oasis and to offer help to everyone who came to them.
From the 6th April 2016, the reconstruction of the convent began. On the 16th December 2016, the Bishop of Panevėžys, Linas Vodopjanovas OFM, consecrated the chapel of the monastery, giving it the name of St. Francis of Assisi. On the 24th September 2022, in the presence of a large number of faithful, Bishop Linas Vodopjanovas OFM of Panevėžys consecrated the newly reconstructed monastery building and the crucifix at the front of the building.
Today, the sisters of the Utena convent are living the call to continue the charism of the founder, Marija Rusteikaitė, “to be a saving instrument of God’s love”, and are serving in the Utena region: They visit and work with the socially vulnerable; they provide spiritual accompaniment to those who ask for it in the premises of the monastery; they organise open prayer evenings, retreats, and host groups for religiously themed weekends; they assist the parishes of the Ascension of Christ and Divine Providence in Utena in the pastoral field. They collaborate with the organisations of the city of Utena in the areas of education and social work.
